What Is The Purpose of Sheet Music
The purpose of sheet music is to provide a guide or instructions so to speak, on how to play a piece of music or sing a piece of music. Sheet music does not take the place of the actual sound when the piece is performed. It is rather the sheet music, which dictates that sound. Additionally, by studying the sheet music, certain details may be accentuated which, on the other hand, may be lost in the performance.
What Is Sheet Music
Musical notations which are printed or even written by hand on paper are referred to as sheet music. Paper is today’s medium used for sheet music but history informs us that at one time sheet music was written on parchment. It is called sheet music for the simple reason to show the difference between music written on paper and music which is recorded, performed live or broadcasted. Many songs which are released on a CD, a DVD or some other musical performance are also printed on a sheet of music. Another name for sheet music used especially by those involved with music is score.
Sight Reading Sheet Music
Reading a sheet of music requires knowledge of musical notation. This requires education and much practice if the individual desires to sight read the sheet music. Once a musician learns the skill of sight reading, they are capable of taking any piece of music and playing it. The ability to sight read is a requirement of serious or professional musicians. The skill of sight reading is taken a few steps further when a musician is able to read the sheet music and actually hear the melodies and harmonies in their head.
Sheet music is the musician’s primary source of instruction for any performance, whether vocal or instrumental. A vocalist memorizes their sheet music before they sing. An instrumentalist however, requires sheet music in order to play the elaborate melodies written for a performance. Sheet music to a musician is like a cookbook to a great chef.
